After the heavy rainstorm that swept across the western parts of the country on Tuesday, SMHI is now warning of new intense showers throughout Wednesday and into the night leading up to Thursday.
The agency has issued yellow warnings for rain resembling cloudbursts across large parts of both Götaland and Svealand. According to SMHI, between 30 and 50 millimeters of rain could fall in a short period in the areas under warning.
“At the moment, it’s only a small part of Götaland where we haven’t issued a warning, but there will still be some showers there as well,” says SMHI’s on-duty meteorologist Christopher Greenland.
The warnings apply on Wednesday morning in eastern Svealand, until around noon in western Svealand, and until Thursday in the far south.
It is difficult to predict exactly which locations will receive the most rainfall, says Christopher Greenland, and there may be large variations.
“One place might get a huge amount of rain, while another just a kilometer away may get barely anything,” he says.

If the heaviest showers hit particularly vulnerable areas, the rain could cause flooding and disrupt traffic.
In contrast, northern Sweden is expected to see sunny weather and high temperatures on Wednesday. In parts of central Norrland, SMHI has issued a yellow warning due to the heat. Locally, temperatures could reach up to 33 degrees Celsius.
“We have a high-pressure system spreading with sunshine and midsummer heat that will gradually move further south across the country. This is pushing the showers down over the continent,” says Christopher Greenland.
Once Thursday’s rain has moved on, sunny and warmer weather is also expected in southern Sweden, with temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius in many areas.
According to SMHI’s forecasts, the sunny weather is expected to last at least through the weekend and into the beginning of next week.
