In a bold move aimed at salvaging their faltering qualification campaign, the Sweden national football team have appointed Graham Potter as head coach on a short-term deal, with the immediate goal of turning around their fortunes ahead of the next matches.
Potter, 50 years old, most recently managed in the English Premier League before being released by West Ham United in late September. He will now oversee Sweden’s final two qualifiers in November and potentially beyond if things improve. His contract runs initially until the end of the qualifying period, with automatic extensions if Sweden make the playoffs and/or qualify for the tournament.
Struggling Team, High Aspirations
Sweden enter the appointment on the back of a disastrous start in their qualifying group for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers: one point from four games, positioned bottom of Group B, suffering defeats including a 2-0 home loss to Switzerland national football team. The previous coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, was sacked on 14 October after an especially poor run of results.
What Potter Brings & The Challenge Ahead
Potter is no stranger to Swedish football: he spent seven years managing Östersund FK in Sweden from 2011 and built a reputation for punching above his weight.
The Swedish Football Association (FA) believes his familiarity with the country, combined with his recent experience abroad, can help inspire a renewal of form. He inherits a squad with talented individuals—such as and —both of whom play in top European clubs.
