It had been flying without providing a flight path or radio contact that could signal its presence, Swedish and German air force officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monitoring, which ended without incident, came as NATO and European Union member countries have been on heightened alert for Russian military and reconnaissance activities in and around their airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, three Russian fighter aircraft&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/british-intelligence-mi6-russia-war-443df0c37ff2254fcc33d5425e3beaa6\">entered Estonia\u2019s airspace<\/a>&nbsp;without permission and stayed there for 12 minutes, the Estonian Foreign Ministry said. That happened just over a week after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-nato-russia-drones-war-ukraine-9477afff4fc963fbe95f4e829f246d21\">NATO planes downed Russian drones over Poland<\/a>&nbsp;and heightened fears that the war in Ukraine could spill over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, (Swedish) JAS 39 Gripens and (German) Eurofighters were scrambled over the South Baltic Sea, identifying and monitoring a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft in international airspace,\u201d the Swedish air force said on its X account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The German Luftwaffe said its jets had initially followed the Russian plane before handing off monitoring to the fighters from NATO ally Sweden, and then returning to Rostock-Laage airfield in northern Germany.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday, German and Swedish fighter jets intercepted a Russian IL-20 surveillance plane over the Baltic Sea.
