German security authorities are investigating the discovery of a drone carrying an explosive device inside the operational area of Leipzig/Halle Airport, close to aircraft operated by Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines. The incident triggered a temporary shutdown of flight operations, the deployment of bomb-disposal specialists and the diversion of passenger and cargo aircraft during the night of August 4 to August 5.
Saxony police said the security response began at approximately 23:40 local time on Tuesday, when an unidentified flying object was observed near the airport. Air-traffic movements were suspended as a precaution, and several incoming aircraft were redirected to other airports. Police subsequently located an object near the southern runway and asked federal police explosives specialists to examine it.
In a later account, Saxony’s State Criminal Police Office said an airport employee had discovered a drone carrying an unknown explosive device in the secured cargo-operations area near the southern runway. Specialists deployed a bomb-disposal robot and removed the device’s detonator. Authorities have not publicly provided a complete technical description of the drone, its payload or the condition in which it was found.
The Dresden General Prosecutor’s Office and the Police Counterterrorism and Extremism Prevention Centre within the Saxony criminal police have taken over the investigation. Their involvement reflects the possibility that the incident could have a political, extremist or state-security dimension. Investigators have stressed, however, that the motive remains undetermined and that no responsible person or organisation has been identified.
Police are examining whether the drone was deliberately directed towards a specific aircraft or facility, whether it malfunctioned or was abandoned, and how it entered one of Germany’s most closely controlled aviation environments. The aircraft’s onboard electronics, stored flight information, communications systems and physical components are expected to be central to efforts to identify its route and possible operator.
The precise intended target is also unknown. The drone was found in an area where Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft are stationed, according to German media and aviation reporting. Antonov Airlines transferred significant parts of its operating fleet to Leipzig/Halle after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the destruction of infrastructure at the company’s home base at Hostomel Airport near Kyiv.
The presence of the Ukrainian aircraft has made Leipzig/Halle an important location for heavy airlift operations. Antonov’s large transport planes are capable of carrying oversized industrial equipment, humanitarian supplies and other specialised cargo. The airport also handles freight connected to German, NATO and Ukrainian logistics, although authorities have not disclosed whether any particular cargo or flight was associated with the suspected device.
A NATO representative said the alliance was aware of the incident and that German authorities were continuing their investigation. There has been no official indication that NATO personnel or facilities were directly targeted. Ukrainian officials and Antonov Airlines had not issued a detailed public assessment of the incident by Wednesday afternoon.
A separate but potentially connected event occurred during the airport shutdown. Investigators said a cargo aircraft that had abandoned its landing approach following the runway closure collided with a suspected second unidentified flying object. The aircraft continued to Hanover, where it landed safely. An inspection identified minor damage, according to German authorities.
The cargo aircraft has widely been reported as a DHL-operated plane, although investigators initially avoided releasing complete identifying information. DHL confirmed that an aircraft had made contact with an object and said the matter was being examined by the authorities. The company said it had contingency arrangements intended to limit disruption to customers.
Investigators have not established whether the object that struck the cargo aircraft was another drone, part of the device recovered at the airport or an unrelated object. Determining whether the two events were coordinated will be one of the most important parts of the inquiry. Evidence from the damaged aircraft, radar records, airport surveillance systems and witness statements may help reconstruct the sequence.
The collision underlined the immediate aviation risk created by unauthorised drones. Even a relatively small unmanned aircraft can seriously damage a cockpit, engine, wing or control surface if struck during an aircraft’s approach or departure. The risk becomes substantially greater when a drone carries explosives or other hazardous material and operates near a busy runway at night.

Flight operations on Leipzig/Halle Airport’s northern runway resumed at 01:55 on Wednesday after approximately two hours of disruption. The southern runway remained closed while investigators and forensic specialists worked at the scene. German regional broadcaster MDR reported that one passenger service and 19 cargo aircraft were diverted during the incident, while other flights experienced delays.
A passenger service arriving from Palma de Mallorca was among those redirected. It initially landed at Nuremberg before later continuing to Leipzig. Passenger operations subsequently continued, and authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the lives or safety of travellers or airport employees. The most significant operational effects were concentrated in the airport’s overnight freight network.
Leipzig/Halle is one of Europe’s major air-cargo centres and the principal hub of DHL’s European express network. Freight operations continue throughout the night, making any closure particularly disruptive. Interruptions can affect tightly scheduled connections carrying parcels, industrial components, medical supplies and time-sensitive goods across Europe and between international destinations.
The airport is designated as critical infrastructure, increasing the significance of any apparent penetration of its security perimeter or airspace. Investigators will need to determine whether the drone was launched from outside the airport, approached at low altitude to avoid detection or was placed within the restricted area. Police have indicated that unauthorised access to the airfield by land would be difficult, making an aerial arrival a central line of inquiry.
Security teams are also expected to examine whether the drone was operated in real time, followed a pre-programmed route or used satellite navigation to reach a predetermined location. Each possibility creates different investigative challenges. A remotely controlled flight could leave radio-frequency evidence, while an autonomous route might depend primarily on data retained in the aircraft’s navigation equipment.
Forensic examination of the explosive device will seek to establish its composition, construction, triggering mechanism and likely intended effect. Public broadcasters NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, citing internal documents, that preliminary testing had indicated the possible presence of PETN and Semtex. Those details had not been fully presented in the initial public statements issued by investigators, which described the payload as an unknown explosive device.
The removal of a detonator does not by itself establish whether the device was functional, armed or capable of exploding in the circumstances in which it was discovered. Specialists will assess whether it failed, was disrupted during flight, had been configured for remote activation or was intended to detonate on impact. Those findings will be critical to determining whether authorities are dealing with an attempted attack, an aborted operation or another form of security incident.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt interrupted his holiday and travelled for consultations with Saxony Interior Minister Armin Schuster and senior federal and state security officials, according to the Interior Ministry. The meeting was expected to address the investigation, coordination between agencies and the protective measures in place at the airport.
German authorities have repeatedly warned of increased espionage, sabotage and unauthorised drone activity around military facilities, airports, energy sites and defence companies since Russia expanded its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow has denied allegations that it conducts sabotage operations against European states. Officials investigating the Leipzig incident have not publicly attributed it to Russia or any other government.
The absence of an established attribution is important. Although the location of the drone near Ukrainian aircraft raises questions about a possible geopolitical motive, investigators must also consider criminal, extremist, commercial and individual explanations. Premature attribution could interfere with the criminal inquiry and create unnecessary diplomatic escalation before technical evidence has been assessed.
Senior German security figures nevertheless described the case as potentially grave. Konstantin von Notz, the Green Party’s spokesperson on intelligence oversight, said that any evidence of state sponsorship would transform the incident into a matter of state-directed terrorism against Germany. His remarks were conditional and did not identify a particular country as responsible.

The investigation comes against the background of previous security incidents involving Leipzig/Halle Airport. In 2024, an incendiary device ignited at a DHL logistics facility after being concealed in a parcel. European security officials have investigated that and similar devices transported through cargo networks as possible components of a Russian-directed sabotage campaign. German officials said on Wednesday that they had not established a direct connection between the earlier parcel case and the newly discovered drone.
The airport has also experienced unauthorised drone sightings unrelated to explosives. Such incidents can force air-traffic controllers to suspend operations because the location and intentions of the drone operator are unknown. German air-navigation authorities have recorded a growing number of operational disruptions involving drones around airports, contributing to demands for faster detection, identification and interception capabilities.
Counter-drone operations at civilian airports are complicated by safety and legal constraints. Electronic jamming can interfere with legitimate navigation and communications, while physically disabling a drone may cause it to fall onto runways, aircraft or populated areas. The presence of explosives introduces an additional risk because an interception method could activate or disperse the payload.
The Leipzig case is therefore likely to intensify debate over how European airports protect large areas that cannot be permanently sealed against low-flying unmanned aircraft. Possible measures include denser radar and acoustic detection networks, radio-frequency monitoring, automated camera systems, clearer authority for security agencies and improved coordination between airport operators, police and air-traffic controllers.
Investigators will also examine airport surveillance footage and access records to establish when the drone reached the southern runway area. Interviews with employees may help determine whether unusual vehicles, individuals or aerial activity were observed before the shutdown. Authorities could seek information from residents and businesses near potential launch areas if the drone’s approach route can be reconstructed.
Tracing commercially manufactured components may provide additional leads, although drones and electronic parts are widely available and can be purchased through intermediaries. Serial numbers, modifications, batteries, packaging materials and explosive components may reveal where the equipment was obtained or assembled. Digital evidence could be more decisive if investigators recover stored coordinates, software configurations or communications records.
The damaged cargo plane will undergo a separate technical examination. Investigators must identify the object it struck and determine whether the damage is consistent with a drone collision. That inquiry could confirm or weaken the theory that more than one unmanned aircraft was operating around Leipzig/Halle during the incident.
Authorities have not announced any arrests. They have also not disclosed whether they received advance intelligence about a potential operation or whether the device was discovered solely because of the airport employee’s observation. The employee’s discovery appears to have allowed specialists to secure the drone before any confirmed detonation occurred.
Operations at the airport were gradually restored as the immediate danger was contained, but the criminal and forensic investigation is expected to continue. Further official findings will be required to determine whether the explosive device was operational, whether the Ukrainian aircraft were the intended targets and whether the collision involving the cargo plane formed part of the same event.
Until those questions are answered, German officials are treating the case as a serious breach involving critical infrastructure rather than assigning responsibility. The combination of an explosive-equipped drone, Ukrainian aviation assets and an apparent airborne collision has made the investigation a priority for both domestic security agencies and European partners monitoring threats to transport networks supporting Ukraine.
